smoking ban and you

Ok folks, let me just make a point:

The day after the election is not the time to complain about something which you could have fought before the election. I didn't see any of you out pamphletting about the smoking ban. I didn't hear of any "No on 901" rallies. I think it's a stupid law, for several reasons, but it does not affect me in the same way it does many of you. You can complain after the fact, but that does not change that you did nothing before the election to create a persuasive argument for anyone to vote no on this. 80% of people in Washington do not smoke tobacco, and so you 20% who do, quite frankly, make participating in certain adult social events difficult for the rest of us, and so people voted in their own self interest. Deal with it. Your rights are not being taken away, as you are certainly welcome to smoke wherever no one is forced to breathe it, and everyone else's rights are enhanced.

It's done, and you did nothing to make it not happen. Either join with the guys who are going to sue (and they will!), or suck it up and quit your disgusting habit, and please stop the self-righteous posturing.

lemme just restate...

would it have really mattered if anyone who was against it did? it's not like this passed by like, 1% of the vote or anything. plus, once again, anyone that did complain was/would be dismissed because they smoked for the most part.

plus, okay... lawsuit, that really worked out well for new york and california didn't it?

I think that people don't care about the bigger picture. there's a difference between ignorance and apathy.

I agree that this initiative is totally over the line as far as the restrictions on what individuals can do in public space. just like a ban on naked people, drug use, and where you can drive.

You quit smoking less than a year ago. Now it's a disgusting habit. The road from smoker to righteous hippie is a short one, I guess. :P ptthbbbthlll

Yeah, you get to the point where you can smell, you don't feel awful all the time, and going to a smoking bar means you 1) have a worse hangover and 2) you cough up brown stuff for a few days, and you think about what's changed. Also, quitting has the added benefit of keeping one from becoming too skinny.

Point one reminds me of when I quit smoking whilst working at the Game Center. I was so disturbed because my sense of smell came back and....well everything smelled like shit. it bugged me so much I started smoking again.

ANyhee... all good points- but you're still a hippy.

HEY! There is NOTHING wrong with having hippy tendencies!

Unless you are in the military, then it becomes the source of everyone's amusement.

I don't even want to go anywhere near calling the Q a hippogoth: I just bought these glasses, and I don't want to have them broken...

Hippie tendencies are one thing, patchouli and hiking boots all the time? totally different!

I actually prefer smoking outside - and even in seattle try to roll to non-smoking bars. I like my clothes not smelling like smoke for days on end.

The issue I've heard, is there aren't the same loopholes that the Cali law has. Its no smoking within 50 ft of a public building or shop, unless a specific smoking area has been set up (which helped out clubs, restaurants, etc.) ALSO bars here that are family owned/runned don't have to follow the law, but it has to be FAMILY only on staff. Granted you also don't have to serve food here to serve drinks.

I've got to say I find it funny (haha?) how self righteous non-smokers and ex-smokers are about this. I keep hearing "it's not about YOU, it's about everyone" but I haven't heard a single smoker say they thought it was. Which is not to say you or others haven't, but I really haven't. The only people I've heard mention it being "about them" are the ex-smokers, non-smokers and hopefuls who say they'd like to change the law to help facilitate their quitting.
I personally think if it's about anyone it's about a business owners right to allow a legal act in their business. Other then that - and more importantly - I think it's about everyone and what sort of control they want to give their government over a very diverse society and the choices an individual is allowed to make. Understanding that it was already very regulated. So I guess I'll keep bitching, crying and whining about it as long as I feel like it.
Yay! That'll be fun!
Well at least you won't have to hear it cause we'll all be outside complaining!

Well, the argument that smoking is a right is a fallacy. You have the ability to do what you want, but society also has the ability to control that impulse where other people are concerned.

nobody is forcing you to smoke, it's not a state of being human, like the desire not to be oppressed and the desire to have free thought. Smoking is something which has undergone a drastic cultural shift in its acceptability, and at this point it's possible for a citizens initiative to get onto the ballot and to be voted into law stating that people who are making the choice to smoke should do it where they dont' affect other people.

This is the tyrrany of the majority, and it's not right, per se, but it's how it works. You have a right to smoke wherever you want, as long as it does not hurt everyone else's right not to breathe it.

Next year, I'm going to see if I can get the american lung association to sponsor an initiative to band car exhaust where people can breathe it. I suspect that, if worded correctly (and using the same logic as this initiative), I can at least get some signatures, and possibly get it onto the ballot.

I didn't say that smoking is a right. I said I thought it was a business owners right to allow a legal act in their business. Which I guess it's not! I do think it's an important thing to note that every one of these businesses is voluntary to patronize. I won't get too far into the whole - but the employees - argument. I will say I find it full of holes, but pretty looking - like swiss cheese!
Yummy cheese.
I think your car exhaust idea is suburb, especially if backed by all the wonderful stats I'm sure there are about the nastiness of that. In reality I see cars (and their pollution) as an often nessecery evil, however these behemoths cruising the roads every day carrying nothing but a single pwned consumer make me want to start breaking shi- uh -make me want to change the law!

at least one can smoke inside their car, without having to worry about any fines. preferably with the engine running to keep the heater going.
